talk to strangers, by letter.

Kindredly is a way to talk to strangers without video, live chat or a profile. You write a letter; it lands first with strangers who write like you, and you trade letters one at a time. You're a number, not a name, letters pass a safety check on their way out, and it's for adults only.

today's desk
NO.9117

I quit the job on a Tuesday. Told no one for four days. Kept getting dressed. Kept leaving the flat. Sat in the library until six.

NO.6817

I have a message drafted since March. It says three words. I have edited it maybe forty times — mostly the punctuation. As if the comma is what's stopping me.

the short version
  • letters, not live chat or video
  • anonymous: a number and a face made of squares
  • matched by how you write, not by chance
  • a safety check on letters going out to strangers
  • free, 18+ only

letters, not live chat.

Random chat drops you into a live conversation with whoever's next, and most of it is “hi” and a skip. A letter is slower on purpose: you have time to think about what you want to say, and so do they.

why it's easier to be honest with a stranger.

People tell strangers things they'd never tell their friends — on trains, on planes, in letters. A stranger has no stake in your life and can't bring it up at dinner. Kindredly keeps it that way until you decide otherwise.

a stranger's letter
NO.3117

I have never told anyone that when my father was ill I was mostly relieved, not because I wanted it to end but because the waiting had a shape at last, and I could finally see the edge of the thing instead of standing in the middle of it guessing.

#never told anyone

which strangers?

Not random ones. Your letter lands first on the desks of the strangers whose writing runs closest to yours — sentence length, rhythm, where you pause, how you end a thought. So the stranger who answers is someone whose letters read a bit like your own.

how the matching works →

anonymous, and kept that way.

A stranger sees a number and a face made of squares — never your name, photo or location. Before your courier carries a letter out to strangers' desks, a safety check reads it, and stops threats, harassment and attempts to swap numbers or social handles. Report or block anyone in a tap.

questions people ask.

how can I talk to strangers online safely?

Stay anonymous and somewhere that moderates. On Kindredly you're a number, not a name; there are no photos until both people trade names; letters are checked on their way to strangers' desks; and you can report or block anyone. See safety.

is kindredly anonymous?

Yes. A stranger sees a number, like No. 4207, and a face made of squares. Names are swapped only when both people enclose theirs, from the fifth letter each way.

is there video or voice chat?

There's no video and no live chat. First Class members can record voice letters in the iPhone app, and each one carries a written line too.

is kindredly for teenagers?

No. Kindredly is for adults, 18 and over.

is it free?

Yes. Fifteen strangers' letters on your desk a day, five new letters of your own a day, and no limit on the letters inside a correspondence — free, on iPhone and the web.

who will I be talking to?

Strangers whose writing runs closest to yours — not whoever's next in a queue. Kindredly matches by how you write, never by photos or where you live.
